Henrik Leijel was born in Stockholm on 29 June 1717, the son of Adam Henriksson Leijel and Hedwig Lucia Lohe. His elder sister Anna married Lars Jacob Adlerstedt.
Henry inherited the estate of Biby from his mother, but sold this estate together with his other Swedish properties to Baron Gustaf Celsing in 1781 (see the story on this website).
Henry had previously left Sweden and settled in England. He was naturalized in England as Henry Lyell by Act of Parliament of 13 George II (1740).
In 1756 he married the 27 year old Catherine Allestrie, their daughter Catherine being born the same year. This daughter Catherine married John Richard West, 4th Earl de la Warr, in Westminster, London in 1783, thus becoming Countess de la Warr.
After the death of Elizabeth Lyell (the widow of Henry’s uncle Baltzar Lyell, in 1752), Henry inherited the estate of Bourn in Cambridgeshire, England as he was the sole heir. 
Henry Lyell died in London on 26 August 1803 and is buried with his daughter Catherine, Countess de la Warr, and her husband John Richard West, the 4th Earl de la Warr (who died at the young age of 37) in the churchyard of Bourn’s Parish Church of St Helena and St Mary.
His will (document PROB 11/1399/176 in National Archives) was drawn up on 26 August 1795 and probated 30 September 1803. His grandson George John West, 5th Earl de la Warr, was just 4 years old when the will was made in 1795.
